Project Risk Management Best Practices

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

ISSIG’s project management symposium, PDS’08, was held this summer near Washington DC. It featured many great presenters. One of them was Don Wessels. He discusses “Continuous Risk Management”.

Too many projects do not do a very good job on risk management. When they do it is usually at the high level when they might to a preliminary plan. And that is their thinking on Risk. We have seen in the classroom and in our consulting a very cursory job on risk. Then the teams and their management are surprised when things go wrong. And nobody likes these types of surprise.

Key Issues are:

Many organizations have a culture that does not allow or punishes risk management

Risk management should be continuous throughout the project cycle
