My name is Jorge Ramos and I worked as a Project Manager for the Pharmaceutical Industry for approximately 4 years. I will not go into details but I had a successful run by completing some high profile projects to the satisfaction of the clients and also my management.

I always wanted to have my own company so I decided to move to Florida and start a construction company. Project management is an integral part of the construction industry and the PM knowledge really help to complete projects successfully.

Starting a construction company in these times has not been easy but I have managed to stay afloat which brings me to my question. How can I market myself as a project manager to established companies which may have projects that need management. I would rather work as a consultant and not an employee, but don’t know how to market myself.

    Thank you,

    Jorge Ramos

    Jorge,

The construction industry is challenging but your transition into it means that you have something to tell them. I would take the next step and become a speaker at professional meetings. Work with a National Speakers Association chapter in your area to connect up with people that can help you deliver a killer speech on how to solve a construction industry problem e.g., Top 5 Things Every Builder Must Know in this Economy or Top Three Issues You Must Know About Reporting on Recovery Act Funds. If you deliver on the promise and provide both an educational and entertaining experience, you will get some attention and contract jobs. Let me know if this works for you. It may be the hardest thing you have every done in your life and therefore exactly what you need to do.

    To Your Success, Rosemary
